What you’ll be doing

The Aboriginal Mental Health Worker (Trainee) promotes the social and emotional well-being of Aboriginal people and the wider community from within a multi-disciplinary community mental health / drug and alcohol team. Under supervision, provides assessment, evidence based treatment and case management services to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal persons.

Selection Criteria

  • Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (NB applicants race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW).
  • Must be willing to provide Proof of Aboriginality with an endorsed common seal (preferably Local Aboriginal Lands Council) or an alternative recognised Aboriginal organisation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and have established links with their local Aboriginal community.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current health issues relevant to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Written and verbal communication skills to a standard to meet the academic entry level of university criteria and to undertake a University degree course.
  • Willingness and commitment to undertake tertiary study towards the Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health).
  • Current unrestricted drivers’ licence and the ability to maintain. Ability and willingness to drive/travel as the role requires. This may involve driving long distances.
