About the Role
We are currently recruiting for a permanent Associate Legal Counsel in our Sydney office. You will be responsible for providing legal support to Brookfield Properties Australia regarding management and operation of the Australian property portfolio.
The role will include: advising on the structuring, documentation and implementation of commercial property transactions including leasing, property management dealings and development projects; being the key point of contact for our Operations and Marketing teams for their portfolio and placemaking activities; assisting the Brookfield Property Group with acquisitions/disposals and due diligence; and advising on general commercial and other operational matters and policies.
Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Managing external legal spend on matters, including setting and enforcing budgets on all matters briefed to external lawyers
Negotiating and documenting property dealings (primarily agreements for lease, leases, heads of agreement, management agreements, operations contracts)
Primary legal contact for operations and site teams in property and facilities management matters
Primary legal contact for marketing team to facilitate placemaking and other events and activities
Providing legal support to Brookfield Property Group in the acquisition and disposal of assets
Assisting with development projects
Assisting senior members of the Brookfield Properties legal team with matters as required
Documenting and managing projects and initiatives of Brookfield Properties
Assisting in creation and maintenance of precedent documents
Assisting with implementation, drafting and updating of policies and procedures when required
Assisting with managing external legal counsel
Providing accurate and up to date legal advice that is commercial, strategic and easy to understand
Assisting with facilitating training and presentations for commercial property team on relevant legal issues
Fostering positive and strategic relationships with tenants, co-owners and other third parties
To be successful in this role, it is expected that you possess the following:
Professional qualifications and experience
7+ PQE with mid-top tier law firm experience
Property law with a strong commercial property, operations and development focus
In-house experience preferred (not essential)
Commercial/corporate law experience recommended
Experience working on major leasing transactions, agreements for lease and development projects
Strong legal research, interpretation and writing skills, being able to make the complicated simple
Strong drafting and advisory skills coupled with accurate, timely and commercially practical legal advice
Strong time management skills and ability to appropriately prioritise tasks
Well-developed communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally, clearly and effectively with all levels of management
Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team in a high-performance, fast-paced environment, able to balance urgency and accuracy
Ability to interpret, understand and implement corporate strategy
A pro-active and flexible approach
Collegiate with ability to foster and build relationships quickly with internal and external stakeholders and advisers
Ability to assess and manage risk
Shows initiative and a willingness to be involved in challenging projects
Well-rounded team member who has a passion for and understands all facets of property
