Performs assignments, which have clear and specific objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables for an engineering discipline within a global business unit.The role will receive technical and administrative supervision from an Engineering Supervisor. Receives instructions on specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions and assistance is furnished on unusual problems and work is reviewed for application of acceptable methods and judgment; provides technical direction to drafters, designers, technicians, and less experienced engineers as directed; and, keep contacts with counterparts in other disciplines, supplier/client representatives and project field personnel when directed, to either gather or give information.# Position SummaryBechtel is seeking a Civil Designer for the Mining & Metals team, based in Perth, Australia. The position will be responsible for plans and conducts independent work within a global business unit requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria. Devises new approaches to solving problems.# SUMMARY:Within one discipline develops designs for complete and complex engineering systems, structures and plant arrangements with minimum supervision. Plans and executes the presentation of these in graphic form or in detailed scale models. Works independently on design projects or may direct the technical work of others.# JOB DIMENSIONS:**A. Supervision Received:**§ Receives operational supervision and technical guidance from a supervising designer or designated supervisor.# B. Supervision Exercised§ None. Assigns tasks to and monitors work of employees in the group when assigned lead responsibility.# C. Contacts§ Contacts equipment suppliers, technical specialists, and, on occasion, client representatives, as directed, to obtain technical information.# ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES**1.** Works independently in the preparation of complex designs from which detailed scale models and/or construction drawings are completed. Assists in constructing detailed scale models.**2.** When working in a lead-role, assigns tasks to best use the knowledge, experience and capabilities of less experienced designers/drafters assigned.**3.** Ensures compliance with approved design standards in own work and by those assigned, to provide quality design.**4.** Reviews and checks calculations, design models, drawings and design documents prepared by assigned designers/drafters for quality, accuracy, neatness, functionality and satisfactory completion.**5.** Is responsible for the accuracy of bulk material quantity take-offs and material requisitions for materials applicable to the discipline.**6.** Works with designers in other disciplines to coordinate overall design and technical requirements.**7.** Develops work plans, budgets, and schedules for basic designer tasks based on input and direction from supervisor in designated discipline.**8.** Answers questions from client or construction group on design scope within assigned responsibility.**9.** Provides on-the-job training for personnel within assigned lead responsibility.**10.** Generates 2D drawings or 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) design models of high complexity with minimal guidance from others.**11.** Participates in and fosters a work environment that is based upon openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.# JOB KNOWLEDGESound knowledge of design and drafting techniques, engineering drawings, graphic arts, reading of drawings, and reproduction methods used by the discipline.Familiarity with relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).Skill in reading, interpreting and using related documents and drawings prepared by other project groups.Knowledge of the application of engineering and construction materials related to the discipline’s design responsibilities.Knowledge of the methods and procedures used for procurement, takeoffs and control of bulk materials assigned to the discipline.Good knowledge of industry and regulatory standards, design criteria and codes relevant to the discipline.Knowledge of mathematical formulae, design calculations and computer application used in the discipline.General knowledge of technical responsibilities of other groups associated with the total design effort.Skill in directing the technical work of less experienced designers and/or drafters.**The above is normally acquired through:**+ Specialized courses in drafting, design and engineering practices, OR+ A recognized degree in an engineering or scientific discipline, AND+ Extensive experience in design and drafting.
