Job Role & Responsibility
We are seeking an experienced employment law attorney to join VMware’s Legal Team and lead our group of legal professionals responsible for counseling on employment law issues across the APJ region. You will join a fun and hard-working group of employment attorneys and other legal professionals who work closely with Human Resources, Employee Relations, and Global Ethics and Compliance to drive global consistency in VMware’s relationship with its employees, while ensuring compliance with applicable laws. This position can be based in either Sydney, Australia or Singapore, with a solid line reporting in to the APJ Regional Lead, and dotted line reporting in to the Global Employment Law Lead.
Your responsibilities include:
Serve as the lead employment lawyer for VMware’s APJ region;
Lead and/or participate in special projects with cross-functional teams, including those focused on improving and enhancing employment-related policies, practices, and processes to execute priorities and ensure compliance;
Help provide practical and business-oriented legal advice to the global human resources team and the business regarding all aspects of the employer/employee relationship including, hiring, employment practices, discrimination, harassment, wage and hour, compensation and benefits, terminations, contractor issues, privacy matters, and diversity and inclusion;
Provide support & guidance to non-employment specialist VMware lawyers in region, who are serving as first line support on employment matters in APJ, including delivering & supporting continued investment in learning & education as necessary. In addition, being pro-active and providing back-up support and strategic guidance to the VMware lawyers in the field, as necessary;
Provide employment law support in connection with mergers & acquisitions, including due diligence and post-close integration;
Manage and partner with outside counsel in employment litigation matters;
Collaborate with the Human Resources Team to generate and implement trainings on HR and employment law topics;
Help keep the Global Employment Lead (as well as the APJ Regional lead) updated & informed as to key employment risks; activities and priorities in the region. Be an active participant and contributor on both the Employment law leadership team as well as the APJ legal leadership team; and
Participate in global projects and initiatives.
We are seeking a forward-thinking, strategic, broad-based business attorney, who demonstrates the following:
You are a qualified lawyer in Australia or Singapore with employment law expertise in multiple APJ jurisdictions;
12+ years of relevant experience specializing in employment law, with both private practice and in-house experience at a multinational corporation strongly preferred;
You have a demonstrated and proven ability to work well with Human Resources and business leaders, leveraging strong analytical and conceptual skills to be effective at building a consensus among leaders;
You enjoy collaborating with colleagues across the globe to achieve a shared goal;
You are a creative and strategic thinker who possesses excellent business sense and judgment;
You are committed to driving diversity and inclusion through the advice you provide;
