This role is based in Sydney, Australia and is a Legal Counsel role in the legal team supporting the Australian business and its board of directors.

The role reports to the Legal Director for Australia.

This position is responsible for:

+ Providing strategic legal and regulatory advice relating to, payments licensing, banking and credit, anti-money laundering and counter terrorist financing, data protection and privacy, information security, competition law, consumer protection, outsourcing, risk management and corporate governance;

+ Assisting with engagement with relevant regulators, including APRA, ASIC, AUSTRAC and RBA;

+ Engaging closely and collaboratively with the Risk, Compliance and Government Relations functions on a variety of legal and regulatory issues;

+ Advising on a range of corporate and business development initiatives and corporate governance and company secretary matters including providing advice and support to a Board of Directors;

+ Advising on obligations arising from the National Consumer Credit Protection Act and National Credit Code.

Candidates should have a minimum of 7 years post qualification experience and be from an established In House Legal team or established Private Practice Law firm with relevant financial services expertise. We have a preference for candidates with solid experience and expertise in Australian financial services law and consumer credit law, strong experience in engaging with regulators in Australia and sound company secretariat skills. Those with experience in advising and working with a board of directors (including independent directors) would be highly regarded.

Basic Qualifications:

+ Ability to work independently ‘Out of the box’ strategic and commercially focused thinking with effective problem-solving skills.

+ Proven analytical, organisational, project management and planning skills

+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills

+ Ability to handle multiple tasks or projects simultaneously in a fast paced and dynamic financial services environment

+ Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on teamwork and ability to foster/manage relationships across multiple departments

+ Skilled in focusing on desired results, clarifying next steps, and ability to prioritise effectively to meet deadlines, address risk and achieve desired results

+ Law Degree and Admission to practice law in Australia required
