About Prison Health Services

Prison Health Services (PHS) delivers primary health care to detained, remanded and sentenced prisoners within the following correctional facilities located in the West Moreton Health catchment area:

  • Brisbane Correctional Centre (BCC);
  • Brisbane Womens Correctional Centre (BWCC);
  • Wolston Correctional Centre (WCC);
  • Borallon Training and Correctional Centre (BTCC);
  • Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre (AGCC);and
  • Brisbane Youth Detention Centre (BYDC).

PHS also provides some in-reach support services to the Helena Jones Centre as an annexure of BWCC.

Dedicated teams are based in health clinics within each correctional facility. Service delivery is coordinated in close collaboration with Queensland Correctional Services under the specific regulations and routine of each individual correctional centre.

West Moreton Health is the custodian of medical records for the total prison population in Queensland

About the role

The Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) is an advanced clinical practice registered nurse who provides operational management and leadership within a Correctional Centre. The Nurse Unit Manager positively influences nursing colleagues to develop in the areas of advanced clinical nursing skills; patient and staff education, patient flow, resource management and service planning.

About you

The successful applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

  • Ability to apply specialised knowledge of contemporary nursing practice and theory in correctional centre nursing and to participate directly and indirectly in the delivery of clinical care.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships, open communication and a positive environment within a multidisciplinary team in the Correctional Centre.
  • Management experience and capability with an ability and commitment to practice collaboratively within the and the broader multidisciplinary health care team to deliver high quality care.
  • Advanced and effective communication, relationship development and maintenance and change management skills.
  • Management knowledge and skills specifically human resource management and advanced financial literacy within the healthcare environment.
  • Legislation / policy knowledge and the ability to develop documents supporting the application of same.
