About the Role

The Wyndham Basketball Association (WBA) is the largest non-professional sporting association in Melbourne’s West. With a vision to “Be the association of choice in Melbourne’s West”, the WBA provides opportunities for all to participate in the game of basketball. The Association provides affordable, accessible and inclusive development pathways for players, coaches and officials.The WBA currently has 15 junior domestic clubs with more than 385 teams and 3000 players and more than 150 senior domestic teams with over 1000 players. The WBA operates a strong Aussie Hoops program for beginners, 42 Junior Representative Teams, 4 Big V teams and has more than 200 Active Referees.

Responsible for strategic direction, management, growth and success of the entire basketball program outside of domestic competitions at Wyndham Basketball Association, the Player & Coach Development Manager will work with the General Manager & WBA Executive Committee to ensure the WBA basketball programs and pathways continue to grow and develop. At an operational level, the Player & Coach Development Manager is responsible for the development and high-performance outcomes for players & coaches within the association, as well as managing the full-time, part-time and casual staff within the basketball program. The appointed candidate must successfully build strong and vibrant relationships with WBA staff, board, members, supporters, volunteers, as well as Basketball Victoria and Basketball Australia. The Player & Coach Development Manager must possess extensive basketball coaching experience, a background in program leadership, as well as qualifications and other relevant experience gained within a sporting organisation.

VJBL & Big V

  • Be the face of the VJBL & Big V programs, acting as the key contact for all player and coach development matters.
  • Develop, implement and improve the Wyndham Way Club Curriculum across the representative program.
  • High Performance Programs & Initiatives

  • Lead the WEST program and other key high-performance initiatives to achieve positive outcomes for players & coaches within the WBA program to progress along the basketball pathway.
  • Coach Education & Development

  • Develop, facilitate and lead coach education, accreditation and development initiatives for entry level, domestic club and representative coaches.
  • Development Programs & Initiatives

  • Oversee the financial management and guide the operations of all development programs, holiday camps, sporting schools, inclusion initiatives and other community development activities. 
  • Management & Leadership

  • Mentor, guide, manage & support the full-time, part-time, casual and volunteer staff in the player and coach development space.
  • Selection and Appointment Criteria

    To be successful in this position, you must possess the following skills and attributes:

    Essential:

  • Deep knowledge about the sport industry within Australia, including the domestic sporting landscape
  • Extensive basketball coaching experience at representative level or higher
  • Experience in working with sporting stakeholders in local government, and with state and national sporting bodies
  • Association Level (Level 2) Coaching Accreditation
  • Experience developing, leading and improving a broad basketball program
  • Experience managing staff and other stakeholders
  • Financial and budget management experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Energetic / Self- starter / Attention to detail / Team player
  • Willingness to work mornings, weekends and evenings as required
  • Desirable:

  • Basketball coaching experience at elite junior or professional levels
  • Tertiary degree in Sports Management, Coaching and/or Teaching
  • Performance Level (Level 3) Coaching Accreditation
  • Experience working in a member based organisation
  • Experience working with external stakeholders such as sponsors, partners and media

  • This is a full-time position, typically 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, however due to the nature of the role and the sports industry, out of hours work (including weekends and evenings) will be required as standard.
