Position Details:

The Principal Application Engineer – Utility Scale is primarily responsible for serving as a technical product specialist for Battery Energy Storage and PV inverter systems. Duties include consulting with SMA’s customers in North America, Mexico and Central America by analyzing system specifications and requirements, reviewing and/or proposing system designs based on expert knowledge and known solutions, answering advanced technical questions, developing and presenting internal sales materials and by collaborating wtih the SMA sales organization including joint customer visits. Position Requirements:


  • Is the Principal Technical subject matter expert for SMA.
  • They advise customers on their technical questions using various communication methods across multiple platforms, with their expert knowledge.
  • Reviews customer and utility interconnection requirements and identifies the correct SMA products and services for their project.
  • Has full professional responsibility for the customers project design.
  • Supports Strategic customers and has expertise in Utility interconnection process.
  • Is the liaison between the U.S. sales team and the Global Technical Consulting team at SMA HQ in Germany.
  • Creates technical training presentations sharing their expertise for internal and external teams.
  • Creates the required technical sales materials for the sales team during meetings with existing customers and potential new clients.
  • Conducts competitor analysis and provides technical argumentation to successfully compete against the analyzed products and/or solutions.
  • Attends industry conferences and trade shows as necessary.
  • Interfaces with Product Management and Engineering.
  • Other duties as may be required or assigned.

  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical/mechanical engineering is required.
  • An additional master’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering would be a strong plus.

  • Minimum 12 to 15 years of experience in engineering.
  • Additional experience in other technical PV disciplines are a plus.
  • Experience in PV industry is required; Energy Storage systems knowledge is a plus.
