Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI)

QAAFI is a research institute of the University of Queensland (UQ) which was established in 2010 and comprises of four research centres – the Centre for Crop Science, the Centre for Horticultural Science, the Centre for Animal Science and the Centre for Nutrition and Food Sciences.

QAAFI’s team of 450 researchers, postgraduate students and support staff undertake high impact science for agriculture and food industries. The institute’s strong partnership with the Queensland Government provides our researchers with a direct link to the agriculture industry in Queensland, and world class field research facilities throughout Queensland. The Centre for Crop Science

The Centre for Crop Science conducts world-leading research targeting enhanced profitability and sustainability of cereal and legume cropping systems in tropical and sub-tropical environments. We pursue excellence in crop science at molecular, whole plant, and production system levels. Our integrated research capabilities include crop genetics, physiology, and modelling, along with soil science and weed biology.

About This Opportunity

The Centre for Crop Science is seeking to appoint an outstanding Professorial Research Fellow or Principal Research Fellow to shape, expand, coordinate and execute the research on legume genomics for tropical and subtropical crops.

This position will be key in leading our strategic agenda to develop new initiatives in legume genomics, in collaboration with multiple stakeholders both locally and internationally. As a research focused academic at level E or level D the incumbent is expected to demonstrate outstanding leadership in guiding the development of others, major funding initiatives and intellectual leadership beyond their specific areas of research.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop an independent and/or team research program including external funding, and achieve national and international recognition in legume genetics and genomics.
  • Develop an ongoing program of discovery, applied and contract research in legume crop genomics.
  • Contribute as a chief investigator to collaborations which yield new insights and opportunities, and have an international reputation for quality and impact of work through publication.
  • Obtain and successfully manage external competitive research grants, and consistently lead successful applications for external competitive research funding.
  • Drive the development of opportunities for the application of knowledge beyond the specific research area to create an environment of cross collaboration between disciplines.

Our Ideal Candidate

In addition to holding a PhD in the area of plant genetics and genomics; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or training/education, the successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Expert knowledge in legume crop genomics.
  • An ability to establish effective relationships and to represent and promote the discipline area at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.
  • National and international recognition in the area of expertise and a strong record of publications in reputed refereed journals and conferences.
  • An excellent record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.
  • Ability to lead strategic research agendas and research teams, with an outstanding record of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing significant external research funding from institutional and commercial sources.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, 5 year fixed-term position, at Research Academic level D or E.

The full-time equivalent base salary for a Level D (Principal Research Fellow) will be in the range $143,954 – $158,584 plus super of up to 17% (total package available will be in the range of $168,416 – $185,544).

The full-time equivalent base salary for a Level E (Professorial Research Fellow) is $185,422 plus super of up to 17% (total package available will be up to $216,943). A competitive remuneration package may be negotiated with the successful candidate.
