The Department of Home Affairs is a central policy agency, providing coordinated strategy and policy leadership for Australia’s national and transport security, federal law enforcement, criminal justice, cyber security, border, immigration, multicultural affairs, emergency management and trade related functions.

The Department of Home Affairs includes the entirety of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. It also includes national security, emergency management and criminal justice functions from the Attorney-General’s Department; the Office of Transport Security from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development; multicultural affairs from the Department of Social Services; and the counter-terrorism coordination and cyber security policy functions from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Overview of the Australian Border Force:

The Australian Border Force (ABF) is an operationally independent body under the Home Affairs Portfolio. The ABF is responsible for operational border, investigations, compliance, detention (facilities and centres) and enforcement functions, and continues to be Australia’s customs service. We operate in a rapidly evolving global environment. We must perform to the highest standards while remaining agile to anticipate and respond to emerging threats, and capitalise on opportunities to partner with domestic and international border, customs, immigration, intelligence and law enforcement agencies. To deliver our mission in the face of advancing technology and new threats, it is not enough to be reactive; we must be professional, disciplined and collaborative.

Port Operations Command delivers the operational effect across airports and seaports under ABF jurisdiction that are intelligence informed and derived from operational priorities and national programmes.

Port Operations Command also manages border enforcement and operational activities on cross-border movements (people and goods) at all Australian airports and seaports, wharves, boarding stations and cruise terminals.

Our officers are operationally focused, uniformed and part of a disciplined law enforcement agency, they patrol our air and seaports, remote locations, mail and cargo centres and Australia’s extended maritime domain. Our officers also perform specialist functions relating to investigation, compliance and immigration detention operations. Border Force Officers are multi-skilled, mobile, agile and responsive. Our work is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Officers may undertake shift work as part of their role. Busy periods for the ABF tend to align with peak travel periods when higher numbers of people enter and depart Australia.

About the role:

Irregular and Intermittent Employees (IIEs) are employed with the ABF at the APS2 classification and assist frontline operational teams to meet peaks associated with the movement of people and goods across the border. IIEs are predominantly required to work at international airports to alleviate pressure on existing teams during periods of increased flight departures and arrivals. They are also utilised to work in teams dealing with cruise liners, International Mail and Air Cargo. This includes work undertaken outside of standard business hours.

These roles are frontline roles which require officers to wear the ABF uniform and represent the ABF professionally in the public domain. Officers undertake administrative and operational support duties, as well as passenger processing. Officers must be capable of interacting with members of the community and foreign visitors.

An ABF IIE employees role within Port Operations Command fits into our operational priorities. These priorities consist of processing travellers, cargo/goods, aircraft, vessels, pleasure craft, stores and crew arriving and departing Australia, including outside metropolitan airports and seaports, such as vessels and small-craft at remote seaports and light aircraft at regional airfields.

Managing cargo also extends to mail, postal articles and small parcels through international mail gateways, express delivery facilities and control activities within the supply chain and logistics industries.

If you are found suitable and offered to undertake casual work for the ABF as an IIE, you will be offered work hours on an irregular and intermittent basis in line with our ABF officers. This includes work within standard business hours, work after hours, on weekends, and/or on public holidays. Work hours will be offered intermittently and sometimes at very short notice. We are looking for individuals who are able to regularly and flexibly commute to ABF sites within their locale as needed. Some roles are located in metropolitan areas and remote locations.

Our ideal candidate:

The ABF is currently looking for flexible, adaptable and reliable people to undertake work on a casual basis, or on a non-ongoing basis at the APS 2 classification.

You will receive appropriate training in order to undertake requisite functions, such as passenger clearances. Training is currently 4 weeks in duration and is undertaken on a full time basis. Successful completion of training is a condition of employment

Specific duties/responsibilities:

In the ABF we are looking for Officers who can:

  • an Australian Citizen;
  • 18 years or over;
  • able to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) and a minimum Baseline security clearance from the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA)
  • able to meet medical and fitness standards relevant to the role; and
  • willing and able to work across a range of domains and locations as required, including undertaking work outside of standard business hours if operational requirements demand.
