This will include a variety of tasks which may vary daily. Such tasks include monitoring the needs of plants from tissue culture, managing the controlled environments to ensure maximum plant performance, assistance with fertilisation, pest and disease management, weed management, grading tissue cultured plantlets, seed collection, germination, weeding, potting, pruning, tree work, accurate record keeping and more.This is a newly created role, due to the expansion of the Tissue Culture and Propagation Divisions of the business. Working closely with managers and senior management, this is a specialised role developed to streamline the processes and improve coordination across the young plant areas of the nursery.The role will ideally suit an experienced, outdoor orientated person who enjoys working with plants, is a team player capable of leading by example with a positive can-do approach to their work.This is a position for a person who thrives in a physical environment and enjoys all aspects of agricultural work.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESTissue Culture:• Care and preparation of mother stock for tissue culture initiation.• Transitioning plantlets from Tissue Culture to nursery, including:o Potting of plantletso Management of plant microclimates, using proprietary methodologyo Water and humidity Managemento Pest and disease monitoringo Hygiene of growing houses – Weeding, sweeping, tree maintenance, waste removalo Grading and consolidation of Tissue Cultured plantso Movement of plants through various controlled environmentso Accurate Record Keeping for Stock Controlo Accurate Record Keeping for Accreditationso Forklift drivingo DespatchPropagation:• Preparation of consumables for propagation including potting media and containers• Collection, germination and planting of seeds, including avocado and mango• Collecting and preparing cutting material of various varieties including fruit and ornamental trees• Grading and consolidation of cuttings• Accurate record keeping for stock control• Accurate record keeping for accreditations• Mother tree maintenance• Nursery Hygiene such as weeding and waste removal• Front End Loader operationGeneral Nursery (as required):• Potting• Pruning• Weeding• Propagation• Cleaning/seed preparation• Tree work – ie: staking, taping• Preparation of plants for sale• Labelling• Stock control• Cleaning• Stock movementSKILLS REQUIRED• Relevant work experience in an agricultural/horticulture environment• Minimum 2 years experience working with Tissue Cultured plants, especially the hardening process for tree crops such as persimmon, avocado, apples and cherries and ornamentals• Minimum 2 years experience in Propagation techniques, ideally with tropical fruit and deciduous ornamental crops• Understanding of plant quality and health• Front End Loader and Forklift driving experience• Willingness to adapt and learn new methods• Ability to listen to instruction• Ability to lead and effectively work with a team (including those with English as a second language)• Organisational skills and accurate written record keeping ability• Track record of reliable attendance• Willing to work varied hours, including some weekends as required from time to time.• Possess excellent work ethic• Adaptable and be flexible in your day-to-day activities• Like working with plants• Happy to support other team members• Accept direction from manager• Pro-active approach• Good communicator• Enjoy working in a team environment• Be physically fit• Hard workingFleming’s Nurseries staff need to be on time, consistent and able to work in seasonal conditions.
