The Opportunity
The position will contribute to research on an Australian Research Council funded Discovery Project “Inequality, Prosperity and the Australian Welfare State’. This project aims to clarify contested understandings of Australian income disparities and the role of economic and social policies in addressing these inequalities. It is a collaboration between the Social Policy Institute in the Crawford School, POLIS@ANU Centre for Social Policy Research and the Social Policy Research Centre at the University of New South Wales.
The project aims to fill significant gaps in understanding of developments in inequality in Australia over the long run and more recently.
It will achieve this by providing detailed, consistent and comprehensive data to enable the analysis of inequality and poverty trends in Australia over time. These databases will be used to analyse the past distributional impact of taxes and social security benefits to identify what factors explain historical and recent inequality trends and identify the most effective policies to reduce inequalities going forward.
Depending on the level of appointment, the responsibilities of the position will range from data development and analysis, contributing to working papers and journal articles with senior colleagues, or publishing original and innovative analysis in refereed journals and/or other refereed publications, presenting research at academic seminars and at national and international conferences, and collaborating with other researchers involved in the project and/or at the international level. The position’s responsibilities will include contributing to the management of the project, including managing the website.
Our Ideal Candidate
The successful applicant will have qualifications in social policy or other social science and cognate disciplines and/or will have experience in working on these issues in an academic or policy environment. They will have contributed to or undertaken research on income distribution and social security or taxation policies and have demonstrated knowledge of existing data sources and the academic literature on these or related issues.
The candidate will report directly to Professor Peter Whiteford and is expected to work collegially, leading by example to develop and maintain effective, productive, and beneficial workplace relationships within the academic and professional School and College staff, students, and honorary appointees, as well as with industry stakeholders. This position may also have a supervising role for students and will engage in collegial and productive collaborations with local, national, and where possible, international colleagues.
